“Of course, we are fully engaged on these issues, but as I’ve said, we are working on economic development around the world. That’s the focus,” Grenell said in an interview with Klan Kosova.
When asked whether he planned to revisit past topics such as border corrections, Grenell said there would be “no going back to anything” and that the plans had always been economic in nature.
“There is no going back to anything. We have always focused on economic development as the driver for solving problems, and we will continue to do so,” Grenell emphasized.
He added that, in his personal opinion, the idea of mutual recognition was ridiculous, because, as he pointed out, young people want jobs.
“I think you should aim for economic development and jobs for young people in Kosovo,” Grenell said, stressing that political solutions come through economic development.
He noted that while working on the agreement between Belgrade and Pristina, he envisioned reaching a point where economic growth would be so significant that it would surpass politics and lead to the withdrawal of NATO troops from Kosovo and Metohija.
“I’ve said this before, and I think that when we were working on these agreements before the [Washington Agreement], I envisioned that we would get to a point where economic development would be so strong that it would outweigh politics, and then we could move to the stage of NATO troop withdrawal,” Grenell said.
He added that he was not suggesting doing this now, because, as he noted, hostilities were still ongoing, but that he looked forward to the day when there would no longer be NATO troops in Kosovo and Metohija, as their presence sends a message to the business community that the area is not safe.
